Adding Transitions and Animations

Objective:
Understand how to apply transitions between slides and animations to objects in a PowerPoint presentation.

Topics:

1. Adding Slide Transitions

Definition:
A slide transition is the visual effect that occurs when moving from one slide to the next during a presentation. It enhances the flow and engagement of the slideshow.

Steps to Add a Slide Transition:

  1. Select the slide where you want to add a transition.
  2. Go to the Transitions tab on the Ribbon.
  3. Choose from a variety of transition effects like Fade, Push, Wipe, Morph, etc.
  4. After selecting the transition, you can preview how it looks by clicking the Preview button.

Customizing Transitions:

  • Duration: You can set how long the transition lasts (e.g., 1 second, 2 seconds) using the Duration option.
  • Transition Sound: You can add sound to transitions from the Sound dropdown menu.
  • Advance Slide: You can control whether the slide advances automatically after a certain time or manually by a click.

Tip: Use transitions sparingly to maintain professionalism. Choose subtle effects for business presentations.

2. Setting Timings for Transitions

Importance:
Timings help control the flow of the presentation, ensuring that slides change at the right pace without requiring manual intervention.

Steps to Set Timings:

  1. In the Transitions tab, find the Timing group.
  2. In the Advance Slide section, uncheck "On Mouse Click" if you want slides to advance automatically.
  3. Check the "After" box and set the time (in seconds) for how long the slide should stay before transitioning to the next.
  4. Apply the same timing to all slides by clicking the Apply to All button if needed.

Example:
If you set "After 5 seconds," the slide will automatically transition to the next slide after 5 seconds.

3. Animating Text and Objects (Entrance, Exit, Emphasis)

Definition:
Animations are effects applied to individual objects (text, images, shapes, etc.) within a slide. They help direct attention to important information and make the presentation more dynamic.

Types of Animations:

  • Entrance: These animations make an object appear on the slide. Example: Fly In, Fade, Zoom.
  • Exit: These animations make an object disappear. Example: Fly Out, Disappear, Wipe.
  • Emphasis: These animations highlight an object that is already on the slide. Example: Pulse, Spin, Grow/Shrink.

Steps to Add Animations:

  1. Select the object (text, image, shape) you want to animate.
  2. Go to the Animations tab.
  3. Choose an animation effect from the options (Entrance, Exit, Emphasis).
  4. Use the Effect Options dropdown to modify the direction or style of the animation (e.g., Left to Right, Top to Bottom).

Customizing Animations:

  • Duration: Set how long the animation lasts (e.g., 1 second, 2 seconds).
  • Delay: You can delay when the animation starts by setting a delay time.
  • Start: Choose when the animation starts:
    • On Click: The animation starts when you click.
    • With Previous: The animation starts at the same time as the previous one.
    • After Previous: The animation starts after the previous one finishes.

4. Managing Animation Sequences

Definition:
Managing the animation sequence ensures that multiple animations on the same slide play in the desired order and timing.

Steps to Manage Animation Sequences:

  1. Go to the Animations tab and click Animation Pane to see a list of all animations applied to objects on the slide.
  2. In the Animation Pane, you can:
    • Reorder animations by dragging them up or down.
    • Modify timings by clicking the dropdown arrow next to each animation and selecting Timing.
    • Add Multiple Animations to a single object using the Add Animation button.

Example:
You can set the text to Fly In first, followed by an image that appears with the Fade effect.

Lab Task:

Create a 5-slide presentation with transitions and animations for each slide and object.

Steps:

  1. Slide 1: Add a Title Slide.
    • Apply a Fade transition to the slide.
    • Animate the title to Zoom in on entrance.
  2. Slide 2: Add a slide with a Text Box and Image.
    • Apply a Wipe transition to the slide.
    • Animate the text to Fly in from the left and the image to Fade in.
  3. Slide 3: Add a slide with Bullet Points.
    • Apply a Push transition.
    • Animate each bullet point to appear one at a time with the Fly In animation.
  4. Slide 4: Add a Chart or Graph.
    • Apply a Split transition.
    • Animate the chart with the Grow/Shrink effect.
  5. Slide 5: Add a Conclusion Slide.
    • Apply a Morph transition.
    • Animate the text to Appear with a Fade out for the exit.

Objective of the Lab Task:

  • Practice using transitions to move between slides smoothly.
  • Use animations to enhance the appearance of text and objects within the slides.
  • Customize timings and animation sequences to create a professional presentation flow.

Conclusion:

By applying transitions and animations effectively, students can make their presentations more dynamic, engaging, and visually appealing.
