 MS PowerPoint and Presentation Basics

Objective

The goal of this class is to help students understand what MS PowerPoint is, how to start it, navigate its interface, create a new presentation, and learn the basic structure of slides. By the end of the class, students will be able to create a simple 3-slide presentation about themselves.

1. What is MS PowerPoint?

  • Definition: MS PowerPoint is a presentation software developed by Microsoft that allows users to create slide-based presentations. It is part of the Microsoft Office suite and is widely used for educational, business, and personal purposes.
  • Key Uses:
    • Presenting information in a visual format.
    • Combining text, images, and multimedia to enhance understanding.
    • Creating dynamic presentations with animations and transitions.

2. How to Start MS PowerPoint

  • Step-by-Step Guide:

1.     Open MS PowerPoint:

§  If installed, search for "PowerPoint" in the Start menu (Windows) or Applications (Mac), and click on it.

2.     Home Screen:

§  When PowerPoint opens, you’ll see a welcome screen with options to create a new presentation, open an existing one, or select templates.

3.     Creating a New Presentation:

§  Click on "Blank Presentation" to start a new project or choose a template if you want pre-designed slides.

3. Overview of the PowerPoint Interface

The PowerPoint interface consists of several important components that help in creating and editing slides:

  • Title Bar: The bar at the top that displays the name of your presentation.
  • Ribbon: The main toolbar at the top with tabs such as Home, Insert, Design, Transitions, Animations, etc. Each tab contains different tools and features.
  • Slide Pane: On the left side, this pane shows a small preview of all the slides in your presentation.
  • Slide Workspace: The main area where you design your slide, add text, images, or other elements.
  • Notes Pane: At the bottom, you can add notes to help with your presentation delivery.
  • Status Bar: Located at the bottom, this bar shows slide numbers and various view options.

4. Creating a New Presentation

To start creating a presentation, follow these steps:

1.     Choose Blank Presentation:

o    Open PowerPoint and click on Blank Presentation from the start screen.

2.     Default Slide:

o    A new slide with the Title Slide layout will automatically appear. This includes placeholders for the title and subtitle.

3.     Adding a New Slide:

o    To add a new slide, go to the Home tab and click on New Slide. You can choose different layouts like:

§  Title Slide: Used for introducing the presentation.

§  Title and Content: Commonly used for adding bullet points or images.

§  Two Content: Ideal for comparing information.

4.     Slide Navigation:

o    Use the slide pane on the left to switch between slides or rearrange their order by dragging and dropping.

5. Basic Slide Structure: Title and Content Slides

  • Title Slide:
    • This is the first slide of the presentation, used to introduce the topic. It typically contains:
      • Title: The main heading.
      • Subtitle: A smaller description or the presenter's name and date.
  • Content Slide:
    • This is where the bulk of your content goes. It can include text, lists, images, charts, etc.
    • In a "Title and Content" slide, you’ll see two placeholders: one for the title and one for content (e.g., text, images, or tables).
    • You can type directly into the placeholders or copy-paste content from other sources.

Lab Task

  • Create a 3-Slide Presentation:
    • Slide 1: Title slide with your name and "About Me."
    • Slide 2: A list of your hobbies.
    • Slide 3: Insert a picture of yourself or something you like.

Steps:

1.     Open PowerPoint and create a new presentation.

2.     Add a title slide with your name.

3.     Insert a new slide for hobbies and list 3-5 hobbies using a bullet list.

4.     Insert a new slide, then add a picture from your computer or online

Slide 1: Title Slide

  • Title: "About Me"
  • Subtitle: Your Name
    • Choose a large, clear font for the title and a smaller font for your name.
    • Consider adding a background color or image that represents you.

Slide 2: Hobbies

  • Title: "My Hobbies"
  • Content: Create a bulleted list of your hobbies. For example:
    • Reading
    • Traveling
    • Cooking
    • Playing sports
    • Photography
  • Use icons or images next to each hobby to make the slide visually appealing.

Slide 3: Picture

  • Title: "Something I Love"
  • Content: Insert a picture of yourself or something you like (like a favorite place, pet, or hobby).
    • You can center the picture on the slide.
    • Add a caption or a brief description if you like, such as “My Favorite Place” or “Me and My Dog.”
